Mountain Outpost: LIVESTREAM at Chuckanut 50k

Chuckanut 50k teamed up with Mountain Outpost thanks to the funds from our City of Bellingham Tourism Grant and a contribution from KEEN Footwear to livestream the Chuckanut 50k on March 21st. We will update links on the home page of our website. But you can find their YOUTUBE Channel on this Link.

We are excited to cover the whole race! First to final finishers and all of the amazing volunteers and supporters that show up for this event. We will have steady cameras at aid stations and cameras on bikes and runners moving around the course. If you know someone that would like to run or bike a camera - email us!

Thank you for being a part of our story!

Runner Study - from Mississippi State University

A research team from Mississippi State University is conducting a national study to better understand the U.S. trail running community, and we’re inviting runners like you to participate.

Hi everyone! I'm a student at Mississippi State University, and we're on a mission to better understand the U.S. trail running community. Trail enthusiasts like you are the heart of this sport, and we want to hear directly from the people who lace up, show up, and keep this community alive. This short survey (15-20 minutes) explores how trail running fits into your life today: what inspires you to sign up for events, what keeps you coming back to the start line, and what gets in the way of registering for more races. We truly would appreciate your participation! We are so close to our goal of responses, but we still need more!!!

Thank you for helping represent the trail running community!

Refund Reminder - February 21

We hope this is not the case, but on the chance something has changed, we are putting out a reminder that February 21 is our deadline to let race directors know that you will not be able to make it for whatever reason on March 21st.

If you are unable to attend the race please let the race director know before Saturday, February 21 to receive your entry refund less $25. If you pre-ordered a shirt, we will be happy to send it to you, or you can donate your shirt back to the race, just let us know via email.

We do not allow entry roll-overs or transfers and are unable to issue refunds after that date. Thanks for your understanding!

Unique Volunteer Position for Friday 3/20

First we want to say a huge THANK YOU to long time race volunteer and amazing member of the community, Jason and the teams he put together, for YEARS of offering his time, truck & trailer, and strength to this massive behind-the-scenes volunteer position. He owned this and we are incredibly thankful!

We need your brawn!

This volunteer position is time intensive and requires physical labor. We need volunteers to transport all water (over 2500 lbs!) and coke to the aid stations Friday before the race. We will supply a rented flatbed truck to pick up, haul and drop off all the water and soda. You need to be comfortable driving on dirt roads and be able to carry 50 lbs on repeat. There are 5 aid stations that need water and soda dropped off at.

Two to three people would make an awesome team to get this done.

The water and soda are to be stashed and hidden at aid station locations along with our provided signage to discourage tampering. Once you sign up, our volunteer coordinator will message you and we can work out the exact details. Thank you for considering this serious workout and huge help to the Chuckanut 50k!

2026 Race Shirts are ready!

We are so excited to share the updated race logo for 2026! We teamed up with local printer Liet Unlimited to print on the tried and true Patagonia Capilene Cool Daily long sleeves. Liet owner, Becky, helped put a new spin on our beloved logo, originally designed by Jeff Browning, aka Bronco Billy. For those with a collection of race shirts like we have, you’ll notice a couple of changes this year. We hope you like them too!

Shirts were available to order at registration or by January 6. We are not able to change your order or add shirts at this time. We do have a few extras on hand that will be available for the same price of $35 at packet pick up on Friday evening and Saturday at the finish line.

30% Discount for Chuckanut 50k Runners: Pact Ultralite Kit

Chuckanut 50k runners! PACT Outdoors wants to offer anyone who purchases an UltraLite Kit prior to the race 30% off using the CHUCKANUT30 code.

Why Poop Matters?

Poop that isn’t buried or packed out is one of the biggest resource issues affecting public lands. It contaminates waterways, harms wildlife, and is a threat to public health.

It is also one of the biggest costs for land managers and is among the top reasons they're forced to reduce permits, close camping areas, and decrease the number of visitors in a given area.

With land management staff and funds at an all-time low, it’s critical that we take care of our poop during the race.

Here’s How We’re Setting You Up For Success At Chuckanut

Use The Facilities

When there’s a porta-potty or bathroom, use it! There are toilets at the start and finish line, and at the first and third aid stations.

Bury Your Poop

When you have to go between aid stations or when there are no facilities, go at least 75 adult paces from the trail (ideally further if at an aid station), find a private spot and bury your poop 6-8” deep. A limited number of trowels will be available at aid stations, but it’s a good idea to pack your own.

PACT Outdoors Single Serves

Chuckanut partner, PACT Outdoors, makes all-in-one bathroom kits for the outdoors. Every runner will receive a single-use Backcountry Bathroom Kit at packet pickup. It contains (2) PACT Wipes and (3) PACT Tabs. To activate the Wipes, add a little squirt of water and they unfold into a 9” towel. They get you clean like a wet wipe, but weigh almost nothing and decompose much more rapidly. After use, deposit the wipe in the cat-hole with your poop or pack it out.

PACT Tabs are wooden plugs inoculated with fungal mycelium. Mycelium is the root system for fungi and nature’s great decomposer. When added to the cat-hole, PACT’s native mycelium decomposes your poop faster and kills harmful pathogens like E. coli. Just add the three PACT Tabs to the hole. Fill with dirt and let nature do the rest.

PACT Ultra Lite Kit

PACT’s Ultra Lite Bathroom Kit is designed specifically for trail runners. It weighs about as much as a gel pack and holds everything you need to dig a hole, bury your poop and stay clean. If you think you might need to go during the race, we recommend carrying a burial kit.

PACT Outdoors is offering Chuckanut participants a 30% discount on all products. Use code: CHUCKANUT30 at checkout.

Here To Help

PACT Outdoors will be present at packet pickup and can answer any questions about waste management. Otherwise, ask your aid station volunteers if you need supplies or support.

Chuckanut 50k Trail Work Weekend!

Live in or near Bellingham?

For information on WTA trail work parties please check out their Volunteer page and scroll down to view the FAQs for more details and learn if this is something you would like participate in.

There will be limited spots on each day, so sign up soon and with knowing that you will be there. We want to be sure to fill these crews and help this awesome organization improve and prep the trails for the race. This will be a meaningful way to ensure your trail work requirement is met. Imagine running over a section of trail during the race that you helped improve!

Keep Trails Clean: Pact Sponsorship

Trail runners hold a huge responsibility to manage our human waste while training and also when racing. There is never an okay time to not dig a hole in the Chuckanuts. The soft soil makes it easy. Follow LNT (notes below).

On race day we will have porta-potties delivered to the start finish area for Saturday morning. There is also a porta-potty being delivered to the Shuttle Pick Up area at WWU. There will be porta-potties delivered to aid station #1 (~ mile 6) and there is a pit toilet at the top of Cleator Rd at Cypress overlook (~mile 21). Please do your best to plan your bathroom needs.

If you find yourself between stops you must follow Leave No Trace Principles. Linking to Principle #3 here. Plan ahead to carry what you might need, including a baggie to carry out any products you use.

  • Move yourself 75 paces off the trail and not near a water source.

  • Dig a hole 6-8” deep. Luckily we have soft dirt!

  • Carry out your paper/wipes if you use.

  • Cover your waste.

To level up your trail waste experience we are excited that Pact Outdoors is bringing their innovation, expertise and easy messaging to the human waste conversation. Specifically this Ultra-Lite Bathroom Kit improves the whole process. Everything you need fits into the handle of this mini shovel. Add water to the biodegradable wipes. Add mycelium tab(s) to the hole you dig in the ground, and you can feel much better about the whole experience. I highly advise you get one sooner than later, keep it in your running pack and gain experience to dial in efficiency, for those on trail emergencies.
